Dealing With
One of the best ways to deal with difficult people is to have a behaviour training course. There is no need to be concerned that it will make people like you and prefer you, they simply don't like you and your attitude. There are two types of people in this world, the ones who like to be admired and the ones who like to be avoided. You are in the second category of people.
This is where dealing with difficult people can become a lot easier. When you know how to deal with difficult people, then they never become difficult for you. The first step towards dealing with difficult people is to accept the fact that you might not get along with them. There is nothing anyone can do about this.
The second step is to determine why you have a problem with them in the first place. What is it that makes you angry? Is it because they didn't do something right for you? Is it because of something they did or said? What is it that causes you to have a bad attitude towards them?
The most difficult but critical step towards being able to deal with difficult people is to not label them as such. A lot of people when they get upset at others, label them as crazy, rude, disrespectful, etc. They fail to see that these are all personal labels and not based on any factual evidence. These types of people would be better off staying home and trying to work things out with their problems. Labelling someone is not the way to solve a problem.
Most of the time, people like you are just having an attitude problem. They seem to always feel as though they are being judged rather than the person who caused them a problem in the first place. For example, if you work in an office and are constantly bothered by a co-worker who is completely enjoyable, you probably have a more difficult job than if you were to sit down and talk to that person directly. You'd probably get mad faster. So what does this have to do with attitude? Quite a bit actually.
There is a big difference between being frustrated by someone and them personally calling you names and acting as though you're a lesser human being. A big part of being able to deal with difficult people is to understand that these people have probably had it worse than you do. It's okay to be frustrated and to want to snap and make them stop, but never to turn your anger into anger. That is how you start problems in work and relationships.
If you are having trouble dealing with people like this, one thing you can do to change their attitude is to give them the same respect and attention you would give to a child. When adults continually disregard a child's needs or talk down to them, the child will pick up on this attitude and begin to think that his or her needs aren't important. The problem is that such disrespect and treatment of others are not corrected. But if you show your child that you take their concerns seriously, they will eventually learn to treat you with respect even when you are annoyed.
But while respect and attention may not be the answer when you are dealing with difficult people, it should at least be something you work towards daily. Take the time to notice their attitude the next time you face one. If you find that it is completely opposite of your expectations, consider why it is that way. Are they always irritable and rude, do they shout and yell at you, do they use abusive language, do they curse, or do they just seem like a jerk? If so, then you know exactly what to do in order to deal with that person the best way possible.
